How to wear costume jewelry

Posted in by

Want to know a way to get a million dollar look without breaking the bank or breaking into a bank for that matter? We’ve got two words for you; costume jewelry. Adored by the A-list, selected by socialites and kept by those in the know, costume jewelry is your top ticket to the top and here Boticca shows you just how to wear it at every social function.

The night out

A night out is a costume jewelry lovers delight. Throw caution to the wind and mix and match statement earrings, bold bracelets and chunky necklaces for an altogether so-costume-it-must-be-real look.

The dinner party

The more sedate setting of the dinner party is where one or two key costume jewelry pieces will really come into their own. The trick is to be bold without being overpowering, noticed without knocking everyone out, in short slightly less is certainly more.

The work party

If you want to shine at your work do for the right reasons, err on the side of caution and pick one key costume jewelry piece and work your outfit around it. Sure your style might be acres more adventurous but a work function is not the place to debut your nighttime style.

The first date

A first date is a veritable minefield or possibilities. Talking too much is a big no no as is giving the date the silent treatment, similarly opening the ‘I’m really into fashion’ drawer too early mightput them off. Give the date a taster of your style, reel them in with a few interesting pieces, leaving them to want date two to get more of your quirky, spot-on style.

Vogue.com UK’s Fashion Editor Julia Neel feeds her love for pretty things at Boticca

Posted in by

I have been fashion editor at Vogue.com for three years – feeding my love of pretty trinkets by editing the jewellery and trends pages. I also edit the social pages on the site, which means that I can be out and about identifying styling trends among the fashion pack.

I have a thing for rings and bracelets at the moment. A quick inventory: as I type this, I’m wearing a total of five rings (it’s a tame day; I usually wear around 8), three gold bangles, two friendship bracelets, two gold bracelets and a gigantic black and rose gold men’s watch. More is more, as far as I’m concerned – when it comes to hands. Of course, that means finger nails should be manicured regularly.

I can never decide whether I prefer serious show pieces or more delicate, ladylike, jewellery – so I wear both. Often at the same time.

Apotropaic Accessories

Posted in by

If there’s one thing we love more than beautiful jewelry, it’s beautiful jewelry that serves a very good purpose, which is why a piece of apotropaic jewelry never very far from our person.

Taking the definition straight from the dictionary, apotropaic means literally ‘turning away evil’ and despite the recent rise in popularity of apotropaic jewelry thanks to celebrities such as Lindsey Lohan and Courtney Cox, it’s roots are centuries old. At almost every stage in history, man has used objects, believed to have magic powers, called talismans to both protect himself and bring him good luck. It has long been believed that talismans with letters, symbols, numbers or abstract signs and names of Gods will help ward off negative energies.

In today’s society, the two most popular or widely used talismans are the evil eye and the hand of Fatima.

The Evil eye charms are designed to protect the wearer from the glances of the envious. It is believed that there are three types of evil eyes; the first is unconscious and these harm people without meaning to. The second type is designed to harm and the third type is the hidden evil eye which is often the most feared. The evil eye is always surrounded in blue which has is believed to be due to the fact that blue is also the color of the sea, of water and water makes all things live.

The hand of Fatima, also called a hamsa hand, has several origins according to faith. In Christianity it refers to the hand of God, in the Jewish faith it refers to the hand of Miriam and in Islam the five pillars of Islam. It is believed that the hand of Fatima was adopted and used by Muslims when they came into contact with Jewish communities in the Middle East and that through these faiths it has widely been accepted by the Christian faith as a symbol of good luck.

For the Jewish faith, five represents the five books of the Torah and also symbolizes the fifth letter of the Hebrew alphabet which symbolizes one of God’s holy names. The five hands of the hamsa hand are also said to remind the wearer to use all of their five senses to praise God.

The number five is also important in the Muslim faith as it represents the five holy persons of the Prophet’s family. It also refers to the five pillars of Islam.

Regardless of religion or belief, there is no denying that apotropaic jewelry has a certain unique and appealing quality, plus you know the saying, better safe than sorry!

Stylist’s Lauren Smith gives Boticca a taste of her quirky style

Posted in by

I work for stylist.co.uk, so I spend my time helping to write and research articles for the website and looking after our twitter and facebook. One minute I could be writing an article about Victoria Beckham’s new fashion line, the next scouring the web for videos of cute animals, or monitoring a web chat with an inspiring businesswoman – it’s very varied and fast-paced!

Despite what people think, you don’t have to wear cutting edge clothes to work for a fashion magazine – but we do see a lot of beautiful clothes so there’s plenty to inspire you on a daily basis.

I have a very short, Jean Seberg style pixie crop so I try to wear a lot of feminine clothes to balance it out. My favourite fashion decades are the fifties and sixties and I am also obsessed with prints, ( I used to work at Liberty, and adored all their fabrics) especially animal print, spots and Breton stripes – I have lost count of the amount of stripey t-shirts in my wardrobe!

Old films are my favourite source of fashion inspiration – at the moment I am obsessed with the seventies glamour of Sharon Stone in Casino and Michelle Pffeiffer in Scarface. I also spend most of my time online, looking at fashion and design blogs – The Selby and The Coveteur are two of my favourites.

MK: Sari Glassman is a mother inspired by her job as a mathematics teacher and her wonderful son, who brought art back into her life. This is the piece I love because it comes from a designer with so much love for her work and her life.
