Piece I Love – July 4th

Handpicked by Poppy

I admit I have a bit of an obsession about rings but this beauty really stopped me in my tracks. It’s big, it’s bold and most importantly it’s beautiful, I’m going to wear it on my wedding finger for an altogether more cutting edge look.

Natural Selection

Posted in by

Throw out your synthetic fibres – fashion is going all natural in time for spring. The SS11 collections were an ode to Mother Nature, with rustic ropes and tassels, fringe and feathers, and a forest of prints pinched from the natural world all major trends.

King of the natural Kingdom was Alexander McQueen, with a wild collection of feather, fringing, and leaves dripping from dresses like Poison Ivy.

Elsewhere, Erdem, and House of Holland created a hothouse of tropical outfits, from palm fringed skirts to blossoming blouses, and Prada and Stella McCartney emblazoned clothes with bananas and citrus fruits.

So why the biology lesson from our favourite designers? Perhaps it was the return of all things seventies this season – when hippies led the way with hemp, crafting clothes from crochet and macramé. Or maybe as spring has (nearly) sprung, designers want to dress us in flora and fauna.

But how to dress ‘natural’ without looking like a lost Love Child? The key is to go wild with your accessories – our favourite natural touches on the runway. Marc Jacobs sent seventies style models down the catwalk wearing flowers in their hair, we spotted adorable bug jewelry on the Lanvin girls, and the butterfly adorned shoes at McQueen were to die for.

On Boticca, our up and coming designers are hot on the trend too – with wonderfully wild accessories inspired by all parts of the natural world. But which will complement your everyday look?  Read on and find out your style species:

Forest

Never one to play it safe, Forest girls love a bit of fantasy with their fashion, playing dress up in a series of dreamy looks.  A lover of layers and floaty fabrics, you work the hippie chic look to perfection, with vintage dresses and jackets, chunky boots, earthy tones, and bundles of quirky jewelry. Your new season must-haves are long seventies dresses and floppy hats, and you LOVE all the crochet on the catwalk.

Forest girls love whimsical jewelry – so go for pieces inspired by woodland creatures. We love this magical unicorn ring from Leila Kashanipour, and adorable Owl ring from Julia Failey, perfect for stacking on your fingers. When night falls, opt for boho glamour with an acorn pendant in 24k gold, or some exquisite gold earrings made from a real branch and leaves! Scarves are a great accessory for Spring – weave this Titania twill scarf in your hair, or knot around your neck – the print of a fantasy woodland scene is truly unique!

Garden

A real English rose, Garden girls are prim and proper, and dress with a girly twist. You love floral patterns, pastels and tea-dresses – but aren’t afraid of a punchy print to liven up your look! Make sure your outfit blooms with a Rose necklace from Alicia Marylin Designs, or an Olivia Rose Ring.  Or create a buzz with insect inspired jewelry – like these cute bee earrings, and Gold Filigree Butterfly studs. But it’s not all girly and sweet – Butterfly inspired accessories like this unique headpiece by Lydia will add a touch of the avant-garde to your look.

Night

One for the rock chicks among you, if you have an edgy look then pick pieces inspired by the darker side of the natural world. An etched crow inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘The Bird’s’ and a baby bird skull pendant will add a gothic twist to any outfit. For something more subtle, we love this elegant silver necklace and Gingko ring – both cast from actual plants. And bad girls will adore this Aphrodite Snake bangle.

Sea

Bit of a beach babe, or always jetting off somewhere exotic? Then these aquatic accessories were made for your laid-back, summery style. For daytime, we love this Seahorse pendant, but once night falls, add a dash of glamour with this Deep in the Ocean bracelet and Reef Earrings. Our favourite sea-inspired piece? This unusual Jellyfish Ring by Arata Fuchi – it wiggles just like a jellyfish!

Philadelphia fashionista and graphic designer Kim Pesch opens the New Year with color and sass

Posted in by

Kim Pesch is the fashion blogger extraordinaire behind eat.sleep.wear. A graphic designer by day, her love for simple, clean and modern design influences her personal style.

But it’s not all minimalism and classic chic. Kim doesn’t take things too seriously when it comes to fashion, and loves to throw in a little ‘rock and roll’ and ‘sass’ into the mix. This makes for stylish reading on her blog.

Forget serious, self-styled snaps, Kim’s blog is a place to ‘experiment, take chances, make mistakes, and just have an amazing time playing with photography and clothes!’

New Year, New You!

Posted in by

Happy 2011! Still nursing a hangover? Or have you already started hitting the gym?

If you’re anything like us, you’ll have started a list of resolutions as long as your arm – and will stick to them, for oh, about two weeks before caving in!

So this year we’ve decided to say goodbye to boring, been-there resolutions (join a gym, eat less chocolate, say no to that extra glass of wine) – and hello to new beginnings! Whether it’s choosing a new career, deciding to start a family, moving to a new area, learning a new skill or even experimenting with a new look – we think a New Year should mean a fresh start – and a New You! Just take these four designers – who turned their lives around – for inspiration.

From a lawyer to an architect, this group of inspiring individuals gave up the security of their current careers, and had the courage to make the move over to fashion design and follow their dreams. Now they get to do what they love for a living! Read their story and be inspired by their bold moves – who knows, it might get you to make a change you never thought you could!

Dirty Hands Jewelry

A true inspiration for anyone who wants to go globe-trotting, Enrique Muthuan arrived in the Big Apple from Argentina with only a law degree and a few words of English under his belt. After working as a lawyer, he decided to trade the courtroom for creating captivating jewelry. Staying true to his roots, his daring designs are inspired by his hometown, Tucaman in Argentina.

Naomi Mcintosh

Proof that great design can translate into any discipline, Naomi trained as an architect and did an MA in design at Central St Martins before setting up her own jewelry label. She now uses her architect’s eye to create ‘wearable drawings’ – sculptural and modern pieces that contour the body.

Alicia Marylin Designs

Alicia started out as a professional actress. But fashion was always her other great love – she spent her childhood rummaging through her grandmother’s extensive jewelry collection, and as an actress she had access to some of the best stylists in the industry. After years of treading the boards, she’s swapped the stage for her Manhattan studio, making unique pieces of jewelry by hand – and has ended up dressing the actresses of today – with Naomi Watts a big fan!

Lizzie McQuade

From fashion stylist to magical milliner! After graduating from Edinburgh College of Art in 2005 with a degree in fashion design, Lizzie began her career with Emma Cook as studio manager. She then worked as a stylist for super cool names like Vogue and Dazed and Confused. But after a millinery course, she decided her heart belonged to hats, and started her own line of quirky but feminine headgear, using unexpected fabrics like latex.

The Round-Up: Week of Dec 6th

Posted in by

The Round-Up is Boticca’s weekly summary of new designers, new pieces we love as well as happenings on our website and around our community.

New designers

Giulia Landini of Madame Framboise (Milano, Italy): Hailing from the Italian capital of fashion, Giulia has recently launched a fabulous line of hair accessories and turbans inspired by fairy tales and the glamour of the early 20th century. Her pieces are entirely handmade in Italy and as she says, “gives you a feeling between child-like fantasies and grandma’s blanket-box”.

La Diosa (London, United Kingdom): La Diosa (Spanish for “goddess”) is the brainchild of London-based duo Natasha Faith and Semhal Zemikael. It is after traveling to Mexico and training with a small community of designers that they found the inspiration for La Diosa: bold, striking yet elegant jewelry for the every day goddess.

Carla Smiley of Orno Jewelry (New York, USA): Having studied architecture, Carla draws inspiration from geometrical patterns found in Moorish architecture to create her line of jewelry called Orno (which is Latin root for the word ornament).

Alicia Marilyn (New York, USA): As a professional actress, Alicia was fortunate to work with many stylists and develop an appreciation for great design. After studying design for many years as an impassioned hobby, Alicia finally began to create her own pieces. The result? A unique mix of class and elegance infused with contemporary design.

Guido La Puca of Rosso Diesis (Napoli, Italy): Guido was discovered by one of our style hunters during a trip to his beautiful city on the Amalfi coast. Using a material of his own creation (by blending ivory and nacreous shavings), Guido makes wonderful, colorful, unique pendants mostly in sinuous shapes that are sure to get you noticed.

5 New Pieces We Love

1. Headband by Madame Framboise. Why we love it: because it takes us back to the 1930s! (not that we were around back then… but you know what we mean!)

2. Lady of Elche earrings by Chic Jewel Couture. Why we love them: This archeological inspired piece (and collection!) never seems to stop fascinating our traveling spirit.

3. Swan ring by Aiyna Singh. Why we love it: Unlike the little duckling who grew up to be a swan, this swan was always gorgeous in silver but has now turned up in a stunning gold version.

4. Charlie the Dino reversible city tote by ZH Collection. Why we love it: the funky patterns that help us brighten up the monotony of everyday life!

5. Acqua neckpiece by Krista R. Why we love it: it’s infinite gracefulness of course!

WOW! Piece of the Week

Hotel Brooch (Daylight) by Selda Okutan. Why: if the piece itself is not cool enough for you, then how about the mechanism that allows the window cleaners to go up and down?

Gift of the Week

Word Stix Necklaces by Julie Tuton. Why: This is definitely a cute gift and since custom wording is also available, you can personalize it too!
