Ikat is a dyeing process in which bundles of thread are bound in select areas of their length and then dyed. The bound portions resist the dye, and when the threads are rinsed, dried, unbound, and attached to the loom for weaving, a pattern emerges. The Soft Beat Ikat series highlights the characteristically lively edges that make ikat cloth famously beautiful, creating a carefree rhythm in the movement of its horizontal ikat bars. The title of the series, “Soft Beat,” was inspired by the musical quality of the pattern, and its reflection of the regular rhythmic sounds of the loom as I wove these scarves.
I personally execute all design and making processes in my Richmond, VA studio: this scarf has been ikat-dyed, woven, and over-dyed by hand and is a one-of-a-kind piece. It is woven with medium-weight mercerized cotton (warp) and a fine-weight wool/angora blend (weft) to create a comfortably weighted and warm piece without being bulky. This scarf is silky and soft with excellent drape in a luxuriously large and versatile size. Care is simple: wash by hand in a delicate detergent, lay out immediately after washing, and dry flat. Do not wring.
